As early as the 18th and 19th centuries, Bellagio had become synonymous with a refined lifestyle. While other villages around Lake Como relied mainly on fishing and crafts, Bellagio began to attract aristocrats, artists, and travelers seeking beauty and relaxation. They were drawn here not only by the climate and the views, but also by the opportunity to spend time in elegant villas surrounded by gardens designed to impress.
One of the most famous examples is the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni. Originally a 15th-century aristocratic residence, it was converted into a luxury hotel in the 19th century. Its gold-adorned halls, frescoed ceilings, and terrace with a panoramic view of the lake became the backdrop for gatherings of Europe’s high society. Even today, Villa Serbelloni remains one of the most prestigious hotels in all of Italy.
No less impressive is Villa Melzi d’Eril, commissioned by Francesco Melzi, Napoleon Bonaparte’s vice-chancellor. The villa’s gardens are a perfect example of 19th-century Romantic landscape architecture: exotic trees, water features, sculptures, a chapel, and a long promenade along the lake.
Town Center
The old town center is crisscrossed by stairways that wind down toward the lake. In each one, you’ll find a café, a wine shop, or a boutique featuring local fashion—Bellagio isn’t just romantic, but also lively and stylish.
