Assisi, a picturesque town on the slopes of Monte Subasio, is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Italy. A spiritual centre whose stone streets, ancient churches and breathtaking views of the Umbrian countryside act as a magnet for lovers of history, art and the authentic atmosphere of Italian cities.

Sights and tourist attractions

The city's most important monument is undoubtedly the Basilica of St. Francis, built in the 13th century shortly after Francis' canonization. This monumental complex consists of two churches - the lower and the upper - and the crypt where Francis' relics rest. The walls of the basilica are decorated with frescoes by Giotto, Cimabue and Lorenzetti, which are among the greatest treasures of medieval art.since 2000, the church and other monuments in the city have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

And in connection with Francis, San Damiano - the monastery outside the city walls where Francis heard the call of God and where St. Clare later lived.also worth a visit is the Basilica of Saint Clare - the final resting place of a close follower of Francis and founder of the Poor Clares.

A walk through Assisi is a journey back in time. narrow stone streets are lined with medieval houses, small squares with fountains and flower-adorned balconies. It's worth climbing up to the Rocca Maggiore, a fortress towering over the city, from where you can see the rolling countryside of Umbria.

Gastronomy and local flavours

After exploring the town, it's worth sampling the specialities of Umbrian cuisine. Traditional dishes include truffles, wild game and beans. Favourites include strangozzi al tartufo (pasta with truffles) and local olive oil. This is accompanied by a glass of Sagrantino di Montefalco wine, one of the best in the region.
