Where is Arzachena?
Arzachena is located in northeastern Sardinia, approximately 25 kilometers from Olbia. Thanks to its location, it is considered the gateway to the Costa Smeralda, one of the most prestigious seaside destinations in the Mediterranean.
Unlike the well-known coastal resorts, however, Arzachena itself retains a more peaceful atmosphere and the authentic character of a Sardinian town.

One of Sardinia’s Most Significant Archaeological Sites
Arzachena is best known for its unique prehistoric monuments. The area was settled several thousand years ago, and to this day, you’ll find some of the best-preserved traces of ancient civilizations on the island.
Nuraghe La Prisgiona
It is one of the best-preserved nuraghe complexes in Sardinia, and its history dates back to the 14th century B.C. In addition to the central stone tower, archaeologists have also uncovered the remains of an entire settlement with dozens of houses. The site is located just a few kilometers from Arzachena and, together with the nearby Coddu Vecchio Tomb of the Giants, is one of the most significant historical monuments in northern Sardinia.
Tomba dei Giganti Coddu Vecchiu
Among the most famous monuments is the Tomba dei Giganti Coddu Vecchiu, or “Tomb of the Giants.” This monumental megalithic structure dates back to the Nuragic period and continues to inspire awe with its size and mysterious history. According to legend, giants were buried here, but the structure’s true purpose was linked to the funeral rites of Sardinia’s ancient inhabitants.
Nuraghe Albucciu
Another interesting site is the Nuraghe Albucciu, one of the typical Nuragic structures that symbolize Sardinia. These stone towers were built more than three thousand years ago and remain among the greatest archaeological mysteries of the Mediterranean to this day.
Li Muri
History buffs shouldn’t miss the Li Muri necropolis either. It is one of the oldest megalithic sites in Sardinia, dating back to the Neolithic period.
The Gateway to the Costa Smeralda’s Most Beautiful Beaches
The Arzachena area is home to some of northern Sardinia’s most sought-after beaches. A short drive will take you to spots that regularly appear on lists of Italy’s most beautiful beaches.
Spiaggia del Principe
This beach, nicknamed “The Prince’s Beach,” is famous for its incredibly clear water and fine, light-colored sand. Many consider it one of the most beautiful beaches in all of Sardinia.

Picturesque coves surrounded by granite cliffs create ideal conditions for swimming and snorkeling.
Liscia Ruja
One of the longest beaches on the Costa Smeralda offers plenty of space even during peak season and stunning views of the turquoise sea.
Cannigione—Arzachena’s Seaside Face
The popular resort town of Cannigione is also part of the municipality of Arzachena. Originally a fishing village, it has gradually transformed into a pleasant tourist destination with a promenade, restaurants, and a marina. Cannigione is an ideal starting point for boat trips to the La Maddalena archipelago or for exploring the Costa Smeralda coastline.
What to Try in Arzachena
Sardinia has its own culinary identity, and Arzachena is no exception.
Local specialties include porceddu (traditionally roasted suckling pig), culurgiones (stuffed pasta typical of Sardinia), pecorino sardo (renowned sheep’s milk cheese), and seadas (a fried dessert filled with cheese and honey).
When to Visit Arzachena
The best time to visit is from May through October. Spring offers pleasant temperatures, a landscape in full bloom, and fewer tourists. The summer months are ideal for swimming and water sports, but expect larger crowds of tourists. September and October attract visitors with their still-warm sea and a more peaceful atmosphere.
