A city in the round - a masterpiece of medieval planning
Cittadella was founded in 1220 by the Padovans as a defensive fortress against neighbouring towns. Unlike most Italian towns, it has an almost perfect circular shape, surrounded by 1.5 kilometres of brick walls with four gates facing the sides of the world.
Interestingly, the fortifications have been completely reconstructed and today you can walk along their crown - the whole it is approximately 1,460 metres long and offers a breathtaking view of the rooftops of the town, the bell towers and the distant Dolomites. This experience is unique: Cittadella is the only town in Europe where you can walk around the entire wall.
What to see in Cittadella
As well as walking the walls, it is worth exploring the historic centre itself, which has preserved the original structure of the medieval town. And what will you see here?
-
Porta Bassanese - the most imposing city gate, from where access to the walls begins.
-
Duomo di Cittadella - an elegant cathedral with 15th century frescoes and a small gallery of sacred art.
-
Museo del Duomo and Museo delle Mura - smaller museums where you can learn about the history of the city and the reconstruction of the fortifications.
-
Casa del Capitano - the residence of a former military commander, now an exhibition space with panoramic views.
In the narrow streets you will also find small cafes, wine bars and craft shops.
Tips for visiting
The ramparts are open daily (depending on the season) and the entrance fee is symbolic - around €5. We recommend entering at sunset, when the light creates a golden haze over the city.
Transport: the Cittadella lies between Padua, Vicenza and Treviso, easily accessible by car and train. From Padua, the journey takes about 30 minutes.
After your walk, don't miss an espresso or aperol in Piazza Pierobon, where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the bell tower and the walls.
Cittadella today - medieval times live
Thanks to a thorough restoration, Cittadella has become one of the most authentic historic towns in northern Italy, but one that still lives its normal rhythm. Throughout the year, medieval festivals, fairs and historical reenactments are held here to recall the town's former glory.
Cittadella is the perfect day trip from Padua or Vicenza. From the height of the ramparts, you'll understand why this place is increasingly making the list of the most interesting towns in Italy.
