Montagnana, a small town in the west of the Veneto region, is one of the best preserved medieval fortified towns in all of Italy. Inside the perfectly enclosed walls are Gothic palaces, quiet streets and, what's more, you can taste one of the most prized types of Parma ham - Prosciutto Veneto Berico-Euganeo DOP.

The best preserved city walls in Italy

Montagnana is surrounded by a two-kilometre-long belt of medieval walls with some 24 towers. Massive battlements, defensive bastions and four monumental gates create a unique historical ensemble unrivalled in Italy. The walls date mainly from the 14th century, during the reign of the Scaligers of Verona, who turned the city into a fortress of strategic importance.

The most famous entrance is the Porta Padova, also known as the Rocca degli Alberi, an impressive fortress gate with several drawbridges in a row.

Gothic dome with an artistic jewel

In the main square, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, stands the Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta, an elegant blend of Gothic and early Renaissance. The interior houses paintings by the Giorgione circle and other valuable frescoes, proving that even a small town can be artistically significant.

Medieval palaces and the atmosphere inside the walls

The streets of Montagnana have a calm and harmonious feel - free of crowds and with the feeling of authentic rural Veneto. In the square you will find townhouses with arcades, the Renaissance Palazzo Magnavin-Foratti or the remains of older defensive buildings. The town can be explored on foot in moments, but offers many details worth stopping for: old family signs, original stone pavements, decorative portals and views of the walls from different angles.

Prosciutto Veneto DOP

Montagnana is home to one of the finest types of ham in Italy - Prosciutto Veneto Berico-Euganeo DOP. Here, the salumai (sausage makers) follow ancient practices based on slow maturation and gentle salting. The result is a ham with a slightly sweet taste and a soft texture, which locals serve with homemade focaccia or seasonal fruit.

Every year the Festa del Prosciutto di Montagnana is held here , a festival that attracts gourmets from all over Italy.

Castle of San Zeno: the oldest part of the fortifications

On the western side of the walls stands the Castello di San Zeno, one of the oldest parts of the fortress, later reinforced by the Scaligers. Today you can walk through the wooden footbridges, the small courtyard and the tower with its lookout.

Excursion tips in the area

Montagnana lies between the Euganean hills and the plain towards Verona, so it's easy to connect with other places of interest:

  • Este and Monselice - towns with imposing castles and beautiful streets

  • Colli Euganei - ideal for hiking, wine and thermal baths in Abano/Montegrotto

  • Cittadella - another unique place with walls that can be walked all along the circular route

If you're looking for a historic town that is authentic and not overcrowded with tourists, while offering distinctive monuments and a strong gastronomic tradition, Montagnana is the ideal choice. It combines perfectly preserved medieval fortifications with the peaceful atmosphere of a small Venetian town.
